Yellow Harvest Mittens II October 7, 2008

I finished up my second pair of Yellow Harvest mittens.  With the first pair I thought that maybe I was letting my gauge get a little too loose and resolved to knit tighter this time around.  I think it’s simply a combination of the yarn and needles and pattern than makes these little jagged ladders in various parts of the mitten.  So after working a little magic with a needle the ladders are gone and no one will be none the wiser.

As invested as I am in the flirtation socks, I feel a slight loathing to picking them back up.  The only thing that keeps me motivated is that I’m half done with the cable pattern and then it’ll be easy going from there on.  Plus it’s the second sock, so it isn’t like I’ll have a whole ‘nother one to do.

There are a handful of things in my queue on Ravelry that I really want to c/o now.  I’m planning on knitting Jax a pair of mittens with the leftover blue yarn I have (that I used on my Yellow Harvest mittens) and then there are these cute cabled slippers that I plan on using the rest of my green Peruvian wool for.  They’re toddler projects, so I don’t expect them to take that long and plus they will use up part of my yarn stash.  🙂

I’ve gotten some good recommendations on yarn stores to see along the way to Minneapolis next month.  I can’t remember the names of the stores, but they’re in Alexandria, Perham and Fergus Falls.  I absolutely cannot wait!

I knit the Yellow Harvest mittens for myself a month ago and while it wasn’t exactly a stressful pattern, it wasn’t really a walk in the park either.  You have to keep an eye on the chart and make sure you remember which one means LPC, LC, RC, and RPC otherwise nothing will look right.  Well, I c/o for my SIL’s pair on Saturday and already have one mitten done and the second one in the works.  I got picked up exactly 40 sts right away after working the cuff both times and am having no problems in deftly switching between st st and then the pattern over 38 rows.  🙂  Hopefully I’ll be able to work on them some today and have them finished and wrapped up so I can give them to her on Saturday!

I’ve got this gorgeous green wool yarn from KnitPicks that I have been waiting to use on some mittens.  Since I had bought pretty blue yarn for the Vogue mittens, I wanted to do something different with the green yarn.  Originally I was going to use the Flirtation cable pattern from Vogue Knitting online, but I wanted something …..more.  Finally I decided to mix the Retwisted Taffy & small 2 cable patterns from Lion Brand Yarn on my mittens.  I’ve been referring to a variety of basic mitten patterns to get mine going.  So far it’s been gong good and the pattern is really turning out.  If anybody ever wants to knit it, they would have to use bigger needles.  I cast on to my size 3 needles and the mitten is fitting pretty snug on my hand  But we will see!

It seems as if the good ol’ post office has sped up the delivery of my yarn and I can expect it tomorrow!  Woohoo!  That’s extra exciting because the mail is delivered anywhere between 10:30 AM and 11:15.  So I’ll have all kinds of time to admire and have a photo shoot with my yarn!  My game plan is finish my mittens (I’m working on the RH one) and then hop right on board with knitting socks.

I’ve already linked the William Street Socks.  And then I’m eager to cast on the Bintje Socks with my crazy yarn that I bought from Prairie Yarns.  Speaking of which, I did get a great picture of that yarn, but I haven’t gotten a chance to upload it yet.

This weekend I got a little excited at the yarn store.  😀  I found my issue of Vogue Knitting at Barnes & Noble and picked up needles & yarn at Prairie Yarns down south.  I’m knitting the Yellow Harvest mittens with Nashua Handknits in a pale blue color.  It is sooooo soft and so far is knitting beautifully.  I’m excited to see how my mittens turn out and so far it seems to be going along quite well.  On a complete indulgence, I also bought a skein of Jitterbug which is washable Merino.  The color is Fruit Coulis, which is like all shades of purple, pink, fushia and darker plum wrapped togethr.  It’s gorgeous and I intend to knit socks with it.  Pictures to come soon, we just got back from out of town and I’m eager to keep trucking on my mittens!

I’m excited!  Since I’ve had to wait and wait and wait ever so anxiously to find Vogue Knitting and something I really really want to knit, I decided to take matters into my own hands.  I’ve found a really cute cable pattern at Vogue Knitting (flirtation) and a pretty generic pattern for mittens.  So my plan is to take generic mitten pattern and add the flirtaiton cables.  Voila!  Something fun & pretty!  Then I also chose a few cable sock patterns via Ravelry.  I found some warm fuzzy yarn, ordered it, and now all I have to do is wait.  But this is a good waiting because it’s paid for, just need it to come in.
